Chapter 5

Naruto was laying on his bed, staring at the ceiling, he had wished so much to be able to stop thinking about his problems, but they had instead been replaced by even more. He turned on his side, his head filled with thoughts of Hinata.
“Why’d she have to say that?” He thought to himself. “Why’d she have to tell me she liked me? Why... Why did I have to fly off the handle like that?”
Naruto turned on his stomach and buried his face in his cushion.
“Did you enjoy rejecting her?” Asked the fox.
“Shut up.” Naruto said.
“Ha-ha-ha. You can see that she was truthful in her confession.”
“Shut up”.
“And you rejected her, someone who actually likes you. Just because of pity”
“Just be quiet.”
“First you attack the girl you believed you loved... and then the girl who loved you.”
“I SAID... be quiet.”
“You have opened the flood gates that held back your anger... your fury... and you will destroy everything around you.”
“SHUT UP!” Naruto cried out in anger, causing the fox to laugh, amused.
Naruto began to cry into his pillow, he could feel the years of anger just building in him again. He had let loose that anger on the four rogue ninja, and regretted it afterwards, and now... he felt he was losing himself to it... and he was afraid. Afraid of hurting more people, just because they do something that makes him angry.
A knock on his door, brought Naruto out his thoughts of self-pity, and anger.
He got up off of his bed and wiped the tears from his eyes as he reached for the handle and opened the door.
“Uzumaki Naruto. Could you come with us please?” asked one of the ANBU who stood before him.
“What is this?” he asked, nervously.
“We’re taking you in for questioning.” The ANBU agent replied.
“Now?”
“Yes. Please get your coat and come with us.”
Naruto was unsure, he knew what this was about, and didn’t want to answer their questions. But, he did so and soon he was at the hokage’s office.
“Why am I here?” Naruto asked, wondering why he wasn’t at an ANBU interrogation room.
“I wanted to make you feel at least a little comfortable, Naruto.” Tsunade responded. She was nervous about asking him the questions she knew she had to.
Tsunade showed Naruto to a seat, before sitting in her own. Naruto looked over his shoulder, nervously at the four ANBU stood next the door behind him.
“Naruto... I’m going to ask the simplest question first.” Tsunade said, “Did you destroy the town?”
“No.” Naruto said, clenching his fist.
“Who did?”
“Four rogue Ninja.”
“What happened to them?”
Naruto didn’t answer, afraid to tell her the gruesome details.
“Naruto... what happened to the four ninja?”
“I... I...” A tear rolled down his cheek, as he tried to say it in the simplest way. “I killed... I killed them.”
“You...” Tsunade said, surprised. She understood Naruto’s reluctance, his disdain for killing was well known, and she knew he would have had no choice to do it. But she knew he was hiding something.
“How?” she simply asked.
Naruto, looked down. “I... I don’t want to....” Naruto just shook his head, not wanting to answer. And Tsunade decided not to push it at that point.
“Why were you so far from the village?” she asked, continuing with the questions.
“I went back for my forehead protector.” He answered.
“So you were on your way back?!” Tsunade said, “Why were you there in the first place?”
Naruto began to explain his training and the night he spent at the town, and about Jay and Aria. Tsunade could see how upsetting it was for him, and soon finished the questioning.
“Ok Naruto... I think that’s satisfactory.” She said, moving around to him, nodding to the ANBU, and motioning them to leave.
She knelt down next to Naruto’s chair and wrapped her arms around him. “It’s ok Naruto. But you can’t blame yourself. You had no idea they would be attacked.”
“I was... I was only gone a short while.” He said, “I... I was so close to them, and I couldn’t... help.”
Naruto was feeling strangely better, talking to Tsunade as she held him, and he too wrapped his arms around her.
Shizune smiled, as she looked at them, the scene reminding her of a mother and son.

Naruto returned home a short while later and once again lay on his bed. He was actually starting to feel better now, and even felt hungry. He took a deep breath and got back up, moving over to his table where his frog wallet lay, he opened it up checked inside. “Enough for four portions.” He said, grinning slightly.
An idea then came to him making him smile even more. But the smile quickly vanished as he thought about it. “She wouldn’t want to go out with me.” He mumbled to himself, “Not after, what I did.”
He pulled a chair out and sat down, looking miserable again.
“It’s your own fault.” The fox whispered to him. “Forget her. You’ll only end up hurting her again. And she will never forgive you.”
“Don’t you ever shut up?” Naruto snapped.
“Getting angry?” the fox laughed
Naruto didn’t respond to the fox’s teasing. He just sat, no longer feeling hungry.
He continued to sit there for a while, even as the sun set and his room grew dark, lit only by the lights from outside that shone through his window.
A knock at his door interrupted his chain of thought.
“Go away.” He cried in responce, “I... I wanna be alone.”
“N-Naruto-kun?” Hinata called back. “Please. I... I want to talk to you.”
“H-Hinata?!” Naruto mumbled, shocked to hear her voice. He quickly stood up and opened the door. “Hinata! W-what are you doing here?” he asked.
“I wanted to see you.” She said, shyly looking down, as she played with her fingers.
“But... why?” Naruto said, sadly looking away. “I mean... after what I did earlier...”
“It’s ok.” Hinata said, saddened herself by it. “I... umm... sh-shouldn’t have surprised you like that I guess. I realise how it must have looked to you.”
Naruto glanced at Hinata, and could see she was upset about it.
“But... I just wanted you to know that... I meant it.” She said, before turning to leave.
“Hinata! Wait.” Naruto said, not wanting her to leave. His heart was racing again, he could feel the blood rushing to his cheeks, turning them a pale red. Hinata turned back to face Naruto, tears forming in the corners of her eyes.
The two stared at each other for a short while, neither sure what to say to the other. “Do you... wanna... go for ramen?” Naruto eventually asked.
Hinata’s mouth opened slightly in surprise, but she quickly smiled, and wiped the tears from her eyes.
“H-hai.” She replied, happily.

Naruto grabbed his wallet again and the two made their way to Ichiraku’s.
“Welcome to Ichiraku’s ramen place, how can I ser... Well, well... Naruto?! Ha-ha.” Teuchi said, as Naruto and Hinata entered. “It’s about you came back. I was getting worried about my favourite customer. I was beginning to think you found someone better.”
Naruto blushed in embarrassment, “No.” He said, “I’ve been eating at home.”
“Oh... home cooking eh?” he smiled, “And has this lovely young lady been the one cooking for you? Well I guess the love I put into my cooking isn’t enough for you.” he chuckled, teasing them.
Both Naruto and Hinata turned bright red. “N-no.” Naruto replied, nervously. “I-I mean, Hinata hasn’t been cooking for me.”
Teuchi just chuckled further as he looked at his two shy customers as they sat down next to each other.
Naruto and Hinata glanced at each other, shy away again when they caught the other looking.
“So... your usual Naruto?” Teuchi asked, breaking the silence.
“Err... y-yes please.” Naruto answered.
“And for you miss Hyuuga?”
“I’ll... h-have the same p-please.” Hinata replied.
“OK. Two orders of pork ramen coming up.” He announced as he turned away.
The two sat quietly for a few more moments, until Naruto turned to Hinata, “So... you said you’ve liked me for some time.” He began, “So... h-how long exactly?” he nervously asked.
“Umm.. s-since I was 8.” She reluctantly confessed.
“What?! That’s... err...” Naruto said in surprise as he thought about it, “That’s... half your life!”
“Uh-huh?!” she shyly said, blushing.
“So... you’ve liked me that long!” Naruto sighed. “Why... why didn’t you say anything?”
“I... umm... well... everytime I got near you I got all nervous and...”
“Pass out!” Naruto said, realising what really happened at every encounter with her. “And is that why you tried to help me at the first test of the chuunin exams? I thought you were just being a friend.” He said.
Hinata nodded, “I didn’t want you to fail so soon, and I could see how distraught you were.”
Naruto smiled. “Yeah... I was just glad for the final question.”
Hinata chuckled at him as he cracked a small smile.
“Here you go kids... on the house.” Teuchi said, placing down two bowls of Ramen.
“Really?!” Naruto said, with a grin.
“For my best customer... just this one.” Teuchi smiled.
Hinata smiled even more, happy to see Naruto happy again.
They both ate their Ramen, Naruto faster than Hinata, and quickly ordered a second bowl. He was actually more hungry than usual, especially since this was his first meal since breakfast.
After eating their fill, Naruto and Hinata said farewell to Teuchi, and began to walk.
Lots of couples were out and about, holding hands, or in other romantic holds.
Naruto gulped as he slowly reached out for Hinata’s hand, trying to act non-chalant about it. Hinata giggle a little and nervously placed her hand next to his.
As Naruto grasped her hand he turned to her with a smile, and the two blushed.
He pulled her slowly closer and stopped walking. Beads of sweat appearing on his forehead as he slowly moved his face closer to hers.
Hinata’s entire face went bright red as she quickly realised Naruto’s intent to kiss her. She closed her eyes and prayed not to faint, to let herself have this moment, the moment she had dreamt about for years. Her first kiss with Naruto.

“UZUMAKI NARUTO?” interrupted a voice, just as their lips nearly touched.
Naruto turned in surprise, to see several Konoha guards. “Uzumaki Naruto... could you please come with us?” asked one of the guards.
“Huh?! What for?” Naruto asked.
“Under order of the council... you’re to be held in confinement.” The guard said.
