Chapter 21.
Naruto visited Hinata everyday she was still in the hospital, even sneaking in after visiting hours, much to the humour of his friends, commenting that it was the first time Naruto ever crept IN to a hospital.
Hinata enjoyed the visits a lot, and her recovery went well, until one day, Tsunade came to her room.
Naruto was sat on the bed next to her, as her father, Hanabi, and Neji stood nearby, having been asked to come.
“What is it Obaa-chan?” Naruto asked, concerned.
“The test results and the x-rays of Hinata’s shoulder have come back.” Tsunade said, and the look on her face told him it wasn’t good news.
“What... what’s wrong?” Hinata said, squeezing Naruto’s hand.
“It seems the damage to your shoulder hasn’t healed as well as we had hoped for, and your entire arm has been affected.” Tsunade explained.
“Affected. How?” Naruto asked.
“Firstly, her arm isn’t as strong or as quick as it should be, It’s possible to improve on that through training, but it’s also possible the damage could even be made worse if she tried.” Tsunade said, “Secondly, we did a test to assess her chakra capability, a standard test for ninja’s with severe limb damage. And her chakra network has indeed been damaged. Neji.” Tsunade said signalling to Neji.
Neji activated his Byakugan. “Yes... I see. There is little Chakra flow into her arm.” He stated.
“What does this mean?” Hiashi said.
“It means, she will be limited in her ability to function fully in battle.” Tsunade said.
“Is... is there any way to... fix it? And if you can’t... what will happen to me?” Hinata asked, concerned. Being a ninja was her life, just like it was Naruto’s, and she feared she would no longer be able to live that life, and be stuck in the daily life of and Hyuuga heiress.
“Again... you could restore some with long, hard, and difficult training, but again, it could make the damage worse. Another option is a difficult surgery which would essentially restore your arm. But the risk is... you could lose more of your physical function, as well as the rest of your chakra generating capability in that arm if something went wrong. As it stands, your arm works fine for everyday things.” Tsunade answered. “And if you’re worried about your work as a ninja, the injury will affect the missions you are assigned to.”
Hinata held onto Naruto’s hand, “You mean... less important missions, ones with less chance of confrontation.” Hinata said, sadly.
“Unfortunately... yes.” Tsunade said. “You can still fight, but unless you can prove your efficiency in battle despite the injury. It’ll have to be that way for your own protection.”
“Then I want the surgery.” Hinata suddenly said.
“What?!” They all said, a little startled.
“But Hinata! You heard her, you could lose even more capability.” Naruto said, worried for her.
“But... if I need the more dangerous missions.” Hinata said, upset.
“Why?” Naruto asked.
“Because I... I... I need to... prove myself.” Hinata reluctantly admitted.
Hiashi sighed, he knew what she meant. The years he had openly shown his disappointment to her had not been forgotten, and was one of the many regrets that he felt towards his eldest daughter.
“You don’t have to prove anything.” Naruto said as he gently stroked Hinata’s cheek.
“Hinata.” Hiashi spoke up. “Don’t take such a risk in order to prove yourself.”
“B-but father?!” Hinata said.
“No arguments.” Hiashi said, in his commanding tone. “You have proven yourself to be brave and wise, just as an Hyuuga should be... Even, if they don’t always show it.” Hiashi’s face didn’t change much, but Hinata could see how he felt.
Naruto chuckled a little.
“What?” Hinata said, a little confused.
“OH... err... nothing.” Naruto said. “You kind of just sounded like me, you know, wanting to prove yourself, and I was just thinking what I would do.”
“And what is that?” Hinata asked.
“He’d probably go for the surgery.” Tsunade said, a little annoyed he would even try to convince Hinata to do the same.
“No way!” Naruto said. “I’d do what I always do, make my weakness a strength.”
Tsunade smirked, “Oh yeah.”
“So... then that’s what I’ll do.” Hinata said, smiling.
“If that’s your course of action, you’ll have to come in for regular checkups.” Tsunade advised.
“Yes ma’am.” Hinata said.
They talked for a short while longer, discussing an appropriate training regime for her, and a few days later, Hinata was finally released into the care of her family.
The following afternoon, Naruto was at one of the training fields sparring with Konohamaru, and Naruto was impressed with Konohamaru’s skill as they punched, kicked and blocked each other’s attacks.
“You’re getting better pal.” Naruto grinned.
“Of course I am.” Konohamaru said, confidently. “Today I’m actually gonna win.”
Naruto just smiled, and quickly increased his skill level to overpower Konohamaru, knocking him onto his back.
“What the?!” Konohmaru said, surprised. “HEY! You tricked me. You were holding back again!”
“And I keep telling you not to underestimate your opponent.” Naruto said. “I was talking to Ebisu this morning. He told me what happened on your last mission, and that’s it’s happened a few times.”
“Oh come on. He’s just making a big deal out of nothing.” Konohamaru said.
“You could have gotten hurt.” Naruto said.
“Ok... so I made a slight misjudgement.” Konohamaru said. “Whats the big deal?”
“The big deal is, you could die.” Naruto pointed out, rather abruptly. “It’s great to have confidence in yourself, I should know. But... sometimes, you have realise your limits to the given situation.”
“That’s rich coming from you.” Konohamaru said, angrily as he got to his feet, “You’ve always taken reckless risks, fought people who were obviously more powerful than you.”
“Yeah... and I’ve paid prices for each failure, as well as each victory.” Naruto said.
“Like what?” Konohamaru said.
“When I was younger, whenever I got in over my head, I used the power of the demon inside me.” Naruto said, “I eventually began to rely on it, to use it recklessly, because I wasn’t strong enough myself. I would win, yeah. But eventually my own recklessness, got people close to me hurt.”
Naruto looked sadly at the ground as he remembered the incidents with Jiraiya and Sakura, and how his impatience and willingness to use the fox chakra had gotten them hurt.
Konohamaru looked down too, he could see Naruto was serious about what he was saying, and that he had learned that lesson in a hard way.
"I just... wanna be more like you.” Konohamaru said. “You’ve gotten so powerful since we first met, and no matter how hard I try, I don’t seem to be catching up at all.”
Naruto chuckled a little. “You’re fourteen, nearly fifteen, Konohamaru.” Naruto said, “You’re just as powerful as I was when I was that age. So don’t worry about it.”
Konohamaru quickly cheered up at Naruto’s words, and once more encouraged.
“Hey... wanna go another round before lunch?” Konohamaru said.
“Ok. But just a quick one, I’m meeting Hinata for lunch.” Naruto said with a smile.
“That’s ok. I’m meeting Hanabi for lunch myself.” Konohamaru said as the two took their starting positions facing one another.
“It’s going good between you two then?” Naruto said sappy for his young friend.
“Yeah.” Konohamaru said, blushing slightly.
Naruto just smiled, and then the two began.

The boy sat on the edge of his hospital bed looking out upon the Leaf village, perhaps for the last time. "I'm sorry Grandma," he said with a sigh.
Tsunade shook her head. "Naruto, you don't have to keep saying that."
"But I messed up, worse than ever," he said, hanging his head in shame.
"I won't blame you for your motivations," the Hokage said, "but the way you tried to solve the problem was reckless and foolhardy. You have to learn to solve your problems without using your fists. Sometimes violence is the only way, but you should always look for an alternative."

Chapter 30: The Leaving
The girl stood by the window, watching the sun cast a softening light over the Hidden Leaf Village as it slowly dipped toward the treetops. Her gaze shifted from one building to the next, lingering on the ones she knew best; the Hokage tower... the academy... her favourite tea house. She strained her weary eyes to try and find the cluster of ancient structures that she had called her home. She wasn't sure if it was the pain in her chakra pathways or the tears blurring her eyes, but she couldn't quite make them out so far in the distance. In some strange, saddening way it didn't

The Hokage put her elbows on her desk, held her head in her hands, and sighed. "This could hardly have happened at a worse time."
Kakashi leaned against a windowsill, hands in his pockets. "Hmm..." he offered in agreement, looking at the floor. Normally he would have been reading his favourite novel, but for once he wasn't in the mood. "So what are you going to do?"
Tsunade didn't answer. She just stared sorrowfully at her desk, rubbing her temples in a feeble attempt to fight off the headache that was rapidly setting in. The room remained silent. Neither of them could see a way
